Thanks Life Alert - My Toddler Has Fallen and She Can't Get Up

It's been a long week here in Virginia. First an earthquake, and then a hurricane. Hurricane Irene did quite a number on our city. Lots of trees and power lines down, and also some damage to cars and homes. Somehow we lost our power before the storm really hit (it was raining, but it didn't seem that bad) and Dominion Power was able to restore it within three hours. It remained on for the rest of the hurricane, which we are so thankful for. I know a lot of people are still without power three days later. I can't even imagine. My husband and I have offered our home to friends, etc. but so far nobody has taken us up on it.

Anyways, during the hurricane we had The Weather Channel on for most of the day at our house. I was so happy that the worst of the hurricane came through during the day time so that we could see what was going on outisde. It's pretty scary when everything is blowing around out there and you can't see a thing!

Let me tell you. The commercials on T…

Surviving My Picky Eater

I have a very.picky.toddler. She would rather eat nothing than look at something new, let alone try something new. For awhile I let it drive me crazy. I begged, I pleaded, I lost sleep and cried on the inside over the lack of variety my little one was consuming.

And then I got over it.

I talked to our pediatrician and read several books and articles about the problem, and they all pretty much sent the same message:

It is the parent's job to provide a variety of healthy foods for a toddler to eat. It is the toddler's job to decide whether or not to eat said healthy foods and how much.

Such a short but very powerful statement. It's made some big changes in our house. No more special meals for AJ. Of course, this has more than once resulted in her eating nothing but strawberries or crackers for dinner. She has more options of course, but she has to make the decision to try new things.

We are making progress. Yesterday she licked a little bit of ketchup off of a chicken nugg…

My Hiatus

August 16th. The days of summer are winding down, and I've even heard rumors about some schools starting back this week. What's up with that?? I'm a firm believer of the American summer, being that I am the mommy and like to do fun things with the kids during their months of freedom from school. My husband is more of a believer of year-round school, with shorter, more frequent breaks to keep the kids' minds fresh. He's probably right. What do you do to keep your kids minds sharp in the summer?

It's been no secret that I've been absent for most of the summer, but I assure you that it's for good reason. We're expecting our second child!! I am due January 25th, 2012 and AJ is so excited that she is going to be a big sister (from what she understands). The two kids will be about 26 months apart, which I think is a good spread. Hopefully they will grow up to be great friends. We'll be finding out the sex of the baby on September 12th (as long as sh…
