Here, Home, Hope by Kaira Rouda {Book Review}

Here, Home, Hope is a fictional novel by author Kaira Rouda exploring the trials and changes that one suburban woman, Kelly Mills Johnson, faces in her thirty-ninth year.

About the book:

Kelly Mills Johnson becomes restless in her thirty-ninth year. An appetite for more forces her to take stock of her ordinary middle-American existence and her neighbors’ seemingly perfect lives. Her marriage to a successful attorney has settled into a comfortable routine, and being the mother of two adorable sons has been rewarding but exhausting. Meanwhile, Kelly’s own passions lie wasted. She eyes with envy the lives of her two best friends, Kathryn and Charlotte, both beautiful, successful businesswomen who seem to have it all. Kelly takes charge of her life, devising a midlife makeover plan.

Rouda's breakout novel is a fresh welcome to the average look at the mid-life crisis. Instead of telling a tale of "woe is me" and depicting a woman who abandons her own already perfect life to persue her own passions, Here, Home, Hope shares an inspiring story of a woman determined to give herself a "mid-life makeover" and come out on the other end a better person.

Kelly Mills Johnson is itching for change, so much so that she write a list of "Things to Change" about herself, and is determined to follow through. The novel, described as Desperate Housewives meets The Middle Place (quite accurately) lightheartedly takes us through Kelly's journey. This light and easy read is like having a conversation with your best friend: simple, heartfelt and full of chatter that you don't want to end.

Though focused on those of us trudging through the "middle ages," this book is an inspiration to women of all ages.

Amy Hatvany, author of Best Kept Secret says, "A warm, witty and engaging debut that had me laughing out loud. Rouda has created a lovable and perceptive heroine who navigates her struggles with honesty and awe-inspiring determination to succeed. A fun and totally satisfying read."
